UP AEROSPACE LAUNCH: A GIANT CANDLE FOR CLOSURE
On 9/11/01 I gathered a small portion of ashes from my car windshield wiper, one mile south of Ground Zero. Six years later the ashes were launched into space. The Las Cruces Sun News wrote about. Space.com and The Space Review published an article I wrote. See pictures of the launch and listen to The Space Show interview. Here's another Space.com article about the same launch, in general (unrelated to 9/11).

UP AEROSPACE PAYLOAD RETRIEVED: CAPSULE HONORING 9/11 VICTIMS ABOARD THE CELESTIS FLIGHT
The capsule containing a small portion of ashes from 9/11/01 was retrieved after the successful parabolic Up Aerospace flight. The capsule was mounted in a plaque with a launch certificate, 2007. Read about it and see pictures here. See the Las Cruces Sun News article.
