Greetings electronic musicians and electronic-musicians-to-be!

I teach three courses at SCC. Come join the fun!

These are 3-credit courses at $75(?) per credit for Arizona residents, plus $100 lab fee, so you can come in throughout the week to work on your music! I think you will really enjoy these classes. We have a new classroom as of Spring '09! Class details are below.

Electronic Music I (MTC 191)

CREDITS: 3

SECTIONS:

• Monday 6:30pm to 10pm (FULL)
• Tues/Thurs 12:30 to 2:05pm
• Tues/Thurs 3:00pm to 4:40pm (FULL)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class is an introduction to producing music with MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and digital audio. Individual workstations consist of Mac G4 computers, Yamaha keyboard controllers, Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Reason and Native Instruments. Synthesizers, drum triggers and other MIDI controllers are also available. The bulk of the class consists of composing one electronic music composition throughout the semester. By the end of the semester, you will have a wonderful piece! Lectures are given most classes on topics such as Subtractive Synthesis, Sound & Waveforms, History of MIDI & MIDI Protocol, History of Electronic Music, Basic MIDI Setups, Digital Audio, as well as hands-on time with creative and technical help during the classtime. Software includes Digital Performer, Reason, Pro Tools and Native Instruments soft synths. Prerequisites: MTC191.

COURSE MATERIALS: No textbook is required. Each student is required to have a 3- ring notebook that will be used for reference materials and assignments. Students are responsible for backing up all computer work. Projects can be saved onto recordable CDs or a USB flash drive (recommended).

ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMS: A written midterm and final are given on specified dates. Students will showcase a sequenced song arrangement for the class twice per semester.

Electronic Music 2 (MTC 192)

CREDITS: 3

SECTIONS:

• Monday 6:30pm to 10pm (FULL)
• Tues/Thurs 12:30 to 2:05pm
• Tues/Thurs 3:00pm to 4:40pm (FULL)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Continued individualized study of the production of music with MIDI and digital audio. Emphasis on more complex configurations and their applications in song arrangements and other advanced concepts. This class is self paced and molded for the specific needs of the student, taking into account the wide range of skills and experience. Students pick an area of focus, such as sound design, live MIDI performance, algorithmic music, microtonal composition, or production. Creative and technical help is offered during class. Software includes Digital Performer, Reason, Pro Tools and Native Instruments soft synths. Prerequisites: MTC191.

COURSE MATERIALS: No textbook is required. Each student is required to have a 3- ring notebook that will be used for reference materials and assignments. Students are responsible for backing up all computer work. Projects can be saved onto recordable CDs, or a USB flash drive (recommended).

ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMS: No written exams are given. Four times per semester, students will showcase a sequenced song arrangement and/or demonstrate progress in specialized project for the class.

Computer-Based Sound Synthesis (MTC 193)

CREDITS: 3

SECTIONS:

• Tues/Thurs 12:30 to 2:05pm

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Continued individualized study of the production of music with MIDI, digital audio, electronics and live performance instruments. Emphasis on more complex configurations and their applications in song arrangements, performance and other advanced concepts. Prerequisites: MTC191, MTC192. MTC193 students will collaborate on a performance.

COURSE MATERIALS: No textbook is required. Each student is required to have a 3- ring notebook that will be used for reference materials and assignments. Students are responsible for backing up all computer work. Projects can be saved onto recordable CDs, or a USB flash drive (recommended).

ASSIGNMENTS AND EXAMS: No written exams are given. Four times per semester, students will showcase a specialized project for the class.
