COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class is an introduction to producing music with MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) and digital audio. Individual workstations consist of 27" iMac computers, Yamaha keyboard controllers (soon to be M-Audio controllers), Pro Tools with Native Instruments Komplete, Abelton Live, Reason and Digital Performer. After the first few weeks, students can use software on their own laptops if desired, if approved by the instructor. Synthesizers, drum triggers and other MIDI controllers are also available. The bulk of the class consists of composing electronic music compositions throughout the semester. By the end of the semester, you will have a wonderful piece! Lectures are given most classes on topics such as Subtractive Synthesis, Sound & Waveforms, History of MIDI, MIDI Protocol, History of Electronic Music, Basic MIDI Setups, Digital Audio, as well as hands-on time that includes help with creative and technical matters.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Continued individualized study of the production of music with MIDI and digital audio. Emphasis on more complex configurations and their applications in song arrangements and other advanced concepts. This class is self paced and molded for the specific needs of the student, taking into account the wide range of skills and experience. Students pick an area of focus such as sound design, live performance, algorithmic music, circuit bending, microtonal composition, or production. Creative and technical help is offered during class. Individual workstations consist of 27" iMac computers, Yamaha keyboard controllers (soon to be M-Audio controllers), Pro Tools with Native Instruments Komplete, Abelton Live, Reason and Digital Performer. Advanced students can use software on their own laptops if desired, if approved by the instructor. Other free software may be shown such as CSound, PD, Max, etc. Synthesizers, drum triggers and other MIDI controllers are also available. Prerequisites: MTC191.

This class is self paced and molded for the specific needs of the student, taking into account the wide range of skills and experience. Students pick an area of focus such as sound design, live performance, algorithmic music, circuit bending, microtonal composition, or production. Creative and technical help is offered during class. Three presentations of your choosing, one sound design assignment, in addition to one group or solo MIDI performance are required. No written exams are given. Individual workstations consist of 27" iMac computers, Yamaha keyboard controllers (soon to be M-Audio controllers), Pro Tools with Native Instruments Komplete, Abelton Live, Reason and Digital Performer. Advanced students can use software on their own laptops if desired, if approved by the instructor. Other free software may be shown such as CSound, PD, Max, etc. Synthesizers, drum triggers and other MIDI controllers are also available. Prerequisites: MTC191 and MTC192.
